UNM Health Sciences Center and ScienceSoft Launch First Statewide WHO Healthy Aging Initiative in the US
On June 16, 2026, the Vive Bien/Live Well app became available to older adults in New Mexico, marking the first statewide adoption of the WHO's Integrated Care for Older People (ICOPE) framework in the US. Led by UNM Health Sciences Center and the New Mexico Health Care Authority, with ScienceSoft as technology partner, the app offers free, prevention-focused self-checks in eight health domains, available in English and Spanish, with offline support. A launch event was held on July 28, 2026, in Albuquerque.
MCKINNEY, Tex. — On June 16, 2026, the Vive Bien/Live Well app became available to older adults in New Mexico as a free mobile tool for prevention-focused healthy aging. Developed under New Mexico's Integrated Care for Older People (ICOPE) initiative, the app is led by the UNM Health Sciences Center in partnership with the New Mexico Health Care Authority. ScienceSoft joined the project as the technology partner, leveraging its extensive experience in healthcare mobile app development.
Vive Bien/Live Well is designed for New Mexico residents aged 65 and older who seek a straightforward way to monitor everyday health changes and prepare for more informed care conversations. Within the app, older adults can complete self-checks in key areas that shape healthy aging: cognition, mobility, nutrition, emotional health, vision, hearing, and bladder health. Based on results, the app provides personalized recommendations, local resources, and a care plan that can be shared with family members, caregivers, or healthcare providers. The app is available in English and Spanish, supports offline use, and was designed with older adults in mind, featuring large fonts, high-contrast options, and clear navigation. Checks can be completed independently or with assistance from a family member, caregiver, community health worker, or healthcare professional.
“Many seniors do not have easy access to preventive screening, and care often happens only after something goes wrong,” said Giselle Rodriguez de Sosa, MD, research assistant professor at the UNM School of Medicine. “With Vive Bien/Live Well, we wanted to bring prevention-focused support directly into the hands of seniors. The app helps older adults better understand changes in their health, take more control of their well-being, and walk into care appointments better prepared for shared decision-making.”
New Mexico's ICOPE initiative is the first statewide effort in the US to implement the WHO's Integrated Care for Older People framework, intended to support healthy aging for more than 387,000 older adults across the state. Earlier this year, the Vive Bien/Live Well project was presented at ICFSR 2026 in Washington, DC, where clinicians and clinic representatives expressed interest in ready-to-use ICOPE screening tools, including those adapted for different older adult populations and care settings. The response underscored the practical need for digital tools that make preventive care more accessible, particularly in communities with limited access to healthcare providers.
The app is available on the App Store and Google Play. To help seniors, caregivers, families, and community members get started, the Vive Bien/Live Well team hosted a free program launch event on July 28, 2026, at the South Valley Multipurpose Senior Center in Albuquerque, with an option to join via Zoom.
